The process of urbanization in Singapore started quite early as compared to other Asian cities. By the early 1900s, the city with an area of over 700 km2 had become severely overcrowded with a burgeoning population. Without having an updated plan and with the lack of control by the British government, slums had sprung up in the older sectors of the city and in the outlying areas. The roads had also become congested, unable to cope with the growth of motor transport.</p> <p>To address these problems, the Singapore Improvement Trust SIT was founded in 1927 with the enactment of the Singapore Improvement Ordinance. After several amendments made to the Singapore Improvement Ordinance, the city has totally changed its look to be what it is today. The infrastructure with tall buildings, wide roads, museums, and majestic parks is modern and carefully planned. Despite all its vertical development and construction, the city puts a lot of effort into staying green. Most of the roads are lined with flowers and well-arranged trees, and a lot of buildings are covered with trees on the rooftops.</p> <p>Thanks to the government's policies, every place in Singapore is very clean. Do you know why?
