<p style="text-align: justify;">Trước Menđen, người ta đã tổ chức những thí nghiệm lai giống động vật và thực vật nhưng chưa thể phát hiện ra quy luật di truyền vì chưa có phương pháp nghiên cứu phù hợp. Lí do là các tác giả đó thường nghiên cứu đồng thời nhiều tính trạng một lúc. Với Menđen, ông đã tách riêng từng cặp tính trạng tương phản và theo dõi riêng rẽ từng cặp tính trạng, nhờ đó ông đã phát hiện ra các quy luật di truyền.</p>
