Công viên có diện tích khoảng 263 km vuông (102 dặm vuông) và bao gồm 173 km vuông (67 dặm vuông) đất liền và 90 km vuông (35 dặm vuông) nước ven bờ. Nơi đây nổi tiếng với loài voọc Cát Bà, còn được gọi là voọc đầu trắng (Trachypithecus poliocephalus) cư trú trong vườn và được Liên minh Bảo tồn Thiên nhiên Quốc tế xếp vào loại linh trưởng cực kỳ nguy cấp; một trong những loài hiếm nhất trên thế giới. Cho đến nay, 282 loài động vật đã được ghi nhận trong công viên. Chúng bao gồm 32 loài động vật có vú, 78 loài chim, 20 loài bò sát và lưỡng cư, 98 loài động vật phù du, 196 loài cá biển và 177 loài san hô. Hơn 1.500 loài thực vật đã được ghi nhận trong đó có 118 loài cây và 160 loài thực vật có dược tính.</em></p>
